We just added some real value to learning!

This lesson was taught on November 9th, This lesson was about place value and counting by tens! I love the way that this lesson turned out! I had help from one of my BYU mentor Emily Soderborg who brought instruments and team taught the lesson with me. I loved sharing ideas with her and the concepts that were discussed! She developed and shared many of the ideas in this lesson with me! First, we reviewed what the beat was and practiced keeping the beat of our new song. Then We did our Hello Dance and engaged ten parts of our body to bend as we counted to ten adding one body part each time ( an idea suggested by Emily). This was a challenge for me to learn, and I was nervous that the students would struggle considering the fine motor development required. The students did amazing and picked up the dance quite well.

We then reviewed axial movement and switched focus to the drum. The students were selected to use a mallet and play at the big drum on the beat as we sang. When there were nine students there were no more mallets. As a class we discussed how no more students could play at the big drum, but that we had a different kind of mallet and instrument that could be use to represent ten! The Xylophone was introduced.

The students suggested that we all dance using all ten bending movements we had practiced before. We then, counted by tens the number of people in the room, the students counted all the way to 160 by tens!! With the students we began to do different math problems using our bending bodies, and using the drum and Xylophone. The students grasped the concepts so quickly and posed some of their own problems. As I asked the connecting questions at the end, I was amazed at how much they had grasped by connecting with music and dance.

I think this lesson was very successful and allowed the students to comprehend place value in new ways as they engaged with multiple modalities. I hope that this lesson serves as a springboard for Ms. Smith as she continues to teach place value. I hope that the students' overall knowledge has been strengthened as they learned through this lesson.
