Hello October! Here's a Little Twist...

October is here!! I was so excited to teach this lesson! Growing up my family has always had a large garden. For me October has meant one thing--Pumpkins!! I was thrilled when Ms. Smith suggested this lesson plan for Arts Bridge. I loved hearing all of the students' favorite things about fall and being able to share one of mine with them! To begin, I brought in different sizes of pumpkin seeds, pumpkins, and a large pumpkin vine. We discussed the process in which pumpkins grow! The hello song introduced the songs and then the students began to dance using the axial movements of twisting, growing, bending, and reaching. My favorite part of the lesson was watching them dance the process as a whole. They were so creative in the way in which they expressed each stage of the pumpkins life cycle. They used their arms, their legs, and their whole bodies on high and low levels and in unique ways.

This lesson helped me as a future educator, to see how excited the students can get to move and explore. When I first pulled out the pumpkin vines, the students got so excited. We took extra time to let the students come up and touch the vines and to truly discover what it was like before dancing. This moment was impactful for me because it demonstrated how important it is to be flexible and encourage spontaneous learning.

I felt like this lesson went smoothly and that the students comprehended the new material so well! After implementing the feedback and suggestions given by both of my BYU mentors and Ms. Smith I felt like I began to be a better educator in this lesson. The students also could relate to what we were talking about due to past experience and because of the aids within the classroom.
